There are 15 km of lakeside to stroll along, snow-capped mountains, a lake with steamships plying up and down, and hotels with the charm of the Belle Epoque - such is the Riviera on Lake Geneva where many international stars, such as Barbara Hendricks, live. And right in the middle of this lakes cape nestle the lovely little towns of Vevey and Montreux - right on the waterfront.
Cultivating the vine is taken very seriously in both places and they form enclaves almost entirely "isolated" by hanging vineyards on the steep hills that drop down to the water's edge. The mild climate in that region also helps to make Montreux and Vevey particularly well-suited resorts for relaxing holidays and is very popular for weekend trips.
When in Montreux, take a deep breath and scan the horizon. To the South, there is Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) blessed by the gods and crowned by the majestic Alps. The Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and dozens of other peaks soar skyward 4,000 m / 13,125 ft and more. To the West and East, vineyards dot the lakeside terraces and reflect a gentle joie de vivre blessed by Bacchus, the god of wine. To the North, there are the Pre Alps where cheese making, skiing, hiking, paragliding, hot-air ballooning, rafting, canyoning, etc. reign supreme. In the middle, a charming city, pearl of the Swiss Riviera. What more can you ask for?
